Both are nice choices. I prefer a car to drive, not just to ride in. I had the opportunity to put the RX through some rigorous testing, and it failed miserable, basically it handles like a Camry. So my pick out of the two is the VW.To put it simply: Lexus is for people who hate to drive. Also check out the BMW X5.

The Toureg definately. Lexus's are overpriced. but if you can afford the lexus go for it, as it is truly the nices and more luxurious car

i prefer the Tuareg over the Lexus but i would go into it knowing that there would be some added maintenance and expense. I do not like the way the Lexus handles at all, the suspension is too soft and it leans more than i like in the corners and feels too floaty over the road like an old Lincoln, but if you are able to deal with the poor handling and driving dynamics it will be more reliable. so its your choice i would go with the VW of these two but really i would consider the BMW 5 series and the Audi Q7 3.6 quattro (non premium) it is the same platform as the VW but with AWD instead of 4 wheal drive and it is extended (more room) and has a third row. But go with the 2008 to avoid some of the Initial models bugs that have hopefully been worked out on the 2008.I agree with jay if you like to drive you will not like the Lexus if you just want decent luxurious transportation (think of a car like and appliance) than the Lexus is for you it will be more reliable just at the cost of dynamics.

I think the RX would do pretty well in the snow. My friend has the older version of it and he got to and from Lake Tahoe without any problems. What i like about the RX is that its comfortable and its reliable (reliability is very important to me especially on long trips) and the interior is pretty nice. The Touraeg is nice too and it does a little better off road, but I dont think its as reliable as the RX and i've heard that the RX 350 gets better gas mileage than the Touraeg (the Touraeg is a heavy vehicle, so the engine needs to use more gas to move its frame) I've seen the trunk space of both vehicles and to me, its about the same. The backseat of the RX is a 40-20-40 split folding bench while the Touraeg is only 40-60 (i'm guessing you can fold the middle seat down for more space and the kids still can sit in the bigger seats) Both vehicles cost about the same (The touraeg can be more expensive if you want the package with the brighter xenon headlights, the package with 4 zone climate control and the navi package (the price i got was 2,900 + 3,400 +3,350) but on the RX, the lights, navi and other stuff is just rolled up into 1 package that costs about 6,206...both vehicles start at about 39K) If these 2 were your only option, i would recommed the RX because I think it can get you guys to the ski resorts and back without any problems and even the non-hybrid is more fuel efficient. Its more reliable and the ride is more comfortable (a good ride can lead to a happy "on the way there" and having a vehicle with great reliablity ratings is always good) If you are open to other recommendations, then I would recommend checking out the 07 Acura MDX. It costs about the same as these 2 and its capable in the snow (Car and Driver Magazine tested it out and says its a very good SUV: http://www.acura.com/content/MDX/Learn/AwardsReviews/Reviews/MDX_eprint.pdf ) and I would also recommend checking out the Audi Q7 3.6 (base) the MDX and Q7 both have a split folding 3rd row which can be used for more trunk space.for the entire Car and Driver comparasion:http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons/12669/eight-tickets-to-paradise-we-compare-eight-50000-luxury-suvs.htmloh and the RX is supposed to have 38.3 cu. ft of cargo space (thats with the seats up) compared to the Touraeg's 31 cu ft (these are from the car makers websites) and i've heard that VWs tend to have more problems than Lexus
