Volkswagen TDI cars. If you mean brand new the are reintroducing it now, but if you mean newer get a Mk4 GTI or Jetta. These engines are extremely reliable, also you could make them run on WVO(waste vegitable oil) for free once the car is warmed up. So get a diesel.

you're dreaming. I have a 2008 Toyota Yaris 4 door 5 speed sedan, and I get 40 mpg hwy. I LOVE IT. I bought it for 13 grand. MSRP is 14,500.00.

$10K? I don't think you'll have much luck at that price level for a new car. You really should buy a 2-year old vehicle, but even a Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sentra might not be less than $10K.You could try a Korean car like a Kia. Quality has improved. But the best you're going to do on the highway will be mid to upper 30 mpg. . . .unless you get a diesel or hybrid which will blow your budget.Use "Yahoo Autos" to start your search. .

Here is a list of cheap, reliable, non-hybrid cars with great gas mileage. No gas powered car gets more than 40mpg. Only Hybrid cars and Diesel cars can achieve that. These cars get anywhere from 30mpg city to 40mpg highway.-Honda Fit-Honda Civic-Toyota Yaris-Toyota Corolla-Nissan Versa-Nissan Sentra-Mazda 3 or Mazda Protege-Mazda 2-Mitsubishi Lancer-Hyundai Accent-Hyundai Elantra-Kia Rio-Kia Optima-VW Jetta gas and diesel-VW Golf/Rabbit gas and diesel. The Diesel Golf and Jetta get 40mpg city and 44mpg highway.

It's amazing how bad car fuel mileage is today. In many cases it's half what it was in 1985. Oh, well.If you'll simply go to fueleconomy.gov, they have tabulated there all the EPA ratings for everything on the road.Of course, if you want 50 mpg, you'll probably need to bypass the web site and shoot for a 1979 Diesel rabbit or something. They don't make fuel efficient cars any more.
